Homework

Homework will be assigned each Monday and will be due on Friday. The purpose of homework is to reinforce skills being taught in class. Weekly homework will include:

  • Reading 20 minutes daily and completing a reading log

  • 2 math pages reinforcing concepts taught in class

  • Review of 5 weekly sight words

Please spread out assignments so that your child completes some homework each night as opposed to completing it all in one sitting. In first grade we are learning study habits that will continue for years to come!

Book Bag

Students will be provided with a book bag that is used both at school and at home. Each week your child will fill their bag with a selection of books at their independent reading level as well as fiction and non-fiction books at a variety of levels. Please ensure that your child brings the book bag to school each day so that they may use the books in class during Reading Workshop. You may choose how you would like to use the books at home. Take turns reading to your child and listening to your child read. You do not need to read every book each night. We ask that you spend 20 minutes a day reading with your child.

Early and Late Reading

Our slip-reading schedule will begin on Tuesday, August 27. Early readers will attend school from 8:35-2:10 and late readers from 9:25-3:00. All students attend 8:35-1:15 on Wednesdays. Split reading allows us to target key areas students need to work on. Placing students in the appropriate learning environment is essential. Since the decision to place children as early or late reads is based on the academic needs of the children, I know you understand why requests cannot be honored. However, if you have pertinent information you think I need to know about your individual child please feel free to contact me.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

Early Reader Dismissal:
Students will be brought to the courtyard located between the Multi Purpose Room and the school office at 2:10pm.  Due to the afternoon recess, the gate will be locked during dismissal time.  Any students not picked up on time, will be taken to the office where you would pick up your child.  In the event of rainy weather, we will use either the overhangs in the courtyard or the Multi Purpose Room for dismissal.  If your child goes to Kids' Country, he/she will use the playground route as has been the case up to this point.  If you have other arrangements for how you would like your child to be dismissed, please let your teacher know so this can be passed on to the staff supervision.

Late Reader Arrival:
Students will wait outside the double gate next to the TK playground with parent supervision.  The gate will be unlocked at 9:25 am.  Students will walk to their classrooms, while parents stay outside the gated area.  Students who arrive after the gate is locked, will need to go through the front office and obtain a tardy slip.  Kids' Country students will be dismissed from the facility and will go directly to their classroom.

Odds and Ends

Birthdays

All birthdays will be recognized in class during our Morning Meeting with a song, certificate and a prize. If you choose to send in something for your child’s birthday, please consider sending in a non-edible treat. Birthday pencils, erasers or a book to share with the class are great ideas! Please do not send birthday party invitations to be distributed at school unless all children receive an invitation.

Food and Pet Allergies

If your child has any food or pet allergies, please alert us. Cooking projects and special events may lead to your child’s exposure to possible irritants to his/her allergies.

Recess and Snacks

First graders have one morning recess daily, from 10:15-10:30. Please send a small snack for your child to eat during this time.
